Factotum’s Favourite Hidden Bars of Edinburgh

Bored of going to the same Edinburgh bars for a tipple during your free time? Interested in trying out new venues?

Whether you enjoy the vibrant bars of George Street or the more traditional pubs of the Grassmarket, I can guarantee after reading about these hidden gems in Edinburgh’s City Centre that you will want to try something new this weekend.

Bramble

Edinburgh Bars BrambleNow this one is well and truly Edinburgh’s best and worst kept secret. Cocktail lovers – this one is for you. If you are feeling adventurous and want to try some ‘unheard of’ concoctions, then Bramble is the place for you. Whether it’s the “Earl of Grey” or simply the “Bramble”, the very pleasant and knowledgeable staff will certainly help you with any tough decision making. Along with their creative cocktail list, they also stock a wide variety of gins and whiskies. Hidden away on Queen Street, this wee quirky and cosy gem is perfect for a catch up with friends or even a romantic date! When you find it, you won’t be disappointed.

Factotum Favourite: “Rheingold Express” Bols Genever, house cardamom & vanilla syrup, freshly squeezed lemon juice & creme de cacao.

Heads and Tales

This underground gin bar in the West End of Princes Street is perfect for a relaxing drink. If you need a well-earned break after shopping or fancy ‘just the one` after work with colleagues then Heads and Tales is the perfect spot. Not only do they have an extensive gin selection, they also house two very admirable beauties – Flora and Caledonia. Sorry gentleman, I’m not talking about the barmaids. These two lovely copper gin stills continue working away whilst you sip at your G&T or gin-based cocktail. If that doesn’t get your attention, then I don’t know what will. However, if gin isn’t your cup of tea then do not fear, they also have a great selection of beers and wines.

Factotum Favourite: “Purple Emperor” Heads and Tales Gin, Butterfly Syrup, Triple Sec, Vanilla and Citrus.

Panda and Sons

panda-sons-edinburghThis modern day speakeasy situated on the west end of Queen Street really is a place worth visiting. Perhaps some would be disappointed at first, nipping in to get a quick ‘short back and sides’ only to realise that this vintage Barbershop is definitely not all it seems. Down the stairs and hidden behind a door (cleverly disguised as a bookcase) is a fantastic wee bar. Upon entry, you are instantly comforted by the welcoming staff. The low lighting, candle lit tables and beautiful leather armchairs make you feel right at home. You can enjoy one of their delicious cocktail creations which compliment the delicious nibbles. Why not pop in over the weekend with your friends and see for yourself?

Factotum Favourite: “Local Bellezza” Tanqueray 10 Gin, Strawberry & Pepper shrub, Maraschino Liqueur, Carlo Alberto Bianco Vermouth.

Pickles

I had to end with my favourite. Pickles really has that ‘home away from home` feeling for me. Tucked in at the bottom of Broughton Street, Pickles is elegantly decorated with fairy lights and wooden furniture throughout, making it a perfect place for feeling snug. Along with their well thought out wine menu, they have a good variety of spirits and bottled beers. The atmosphere and chatty staff are not the only reasons that keep me coming back. They also offer up beautifully prepared meat and cheese platters, a variety of pates and a generous amount of bread and oatcakes to accompany them. The portions are large making it perfect for sharing. There is only a small amount of tables, so make sure you get there early to grab one in time! Trust me on this one – you won’t be disappointed.

Factotum Favourite: “Pickles Platter Deal” choose between a meat, cheese or mixed platter with a bottle of house wine for £25.

Of course, this is just a handful of the hidden Edinburgh bars that the City Centre has to offer. These are my personal favourites and if you venture in to them, you will definitely understand why. There are many more hidden within the city, so take yourself out of your comfort zone and away from your regular haunts as you will be sure to thank me later, along with the wonderful bartenders!
